DNF @TNF50. My North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Mile Race Recap

Not finishing a race is probably the most valuable lesson one can receive in ultrarunning. On December 5th, 2015, I got that lesson. I DNF’ed (Did Not Finish) at mile 37. The weather was perfectly cold and dry, my nutrition was dialed in, my injuries did not flare up, I drank lots, ate lots, and took my salt pills but, I still ended up blowing up my quads after getting done with Muir Woods. The 2014 North Face 50-Mile Endurance Challenge Recap

I was on a mission this year. I wanted to my first ultramarathon experience to be a great one, and man, did I pick a great race to be a part of this year. Even though my first trail marathon experience in 2013 was brutally difficult, my decision to toe the ultramarathon line in 2014 was simply because I felt that 26.2 miles was not a big enough distance to my liking. This time around, running an additional five miles didn’t seem like it was a big enough challenge for me (in distance) so a 50 kilometer race as my first ultramarathon race was out of the question. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good 50 kilometer run, but a 50 mile distance felt long enough to play with my demons on my first ultra. On May 10th, I bought the ticket.
